Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear?
We recommend you wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move around in. For shoes, we generally recommend flat-soled shoes like Keds. Heels can be tricky to swing dance in! Suede or hard leather soles are also highly recommended. Flip-flops or sandals are discouraged!
Do I need a partner?
No! Our classes will continuously rotate partners, and thus bringing a partner is not necessary. We highly recommend dancing with as many different people as possible to help you learn faster!
Do I need to register?
No! Simply pay at the door, no pre-registration required. We currently only accept cash, but please no bills larger than $20 if possible!
I’ve never danced before, help!
Don’t worry, swing dancing is a fun and accessible style of partnered dance that anyone can pick up! Our 7pm class is designed for teaching the basics of Lindy Hop to anyone, showing you rhythms, steps, and how to connect with a partner–no prior experience is necessary, you can learn these basics right away!
I’ve learned other dances, what now?
If you have experience doing any partnered(ballroom, salsa, west coast swing, etc) or solo(ballet, modern, jazz, etc.), then you’ll be able to quickly pick up the techniques of Lindy Hop like triple steps, rock steps, frame, etc. Experience in other swing dance forms like East Coast Swing, Shag, Charleston and others will also help to learn to Lindy Hop quickly!
What is Lindy Hop?
Lindy Hop is an American dance style born in Harlem, New York during the 1920s. Hugely popular during the 1930s and 40s, Lindy Hop saw a huge revival in the 1980s that continues to thrive today. It is often seen as the “flagship” dance of authentic jazz and swing dances. The dance is infectiously fun both to do and watch, often characterized with lots of energy and improvisational qualities.
Who goes to your dances/classes?
Our average age range in attendance is somewhere in their early 20s to late 30s, however, swing dancing is for all ages! We regularly have students and visiting dancers of nearly every age category, anyone who wants to dance with us is always welcome regardless of any factor.
When is the best time to start?
If you’re just getting started, there’s no time like right now! Our 7pm class is drop-in and teaches the basics from the ground level each week, so you can start on any Monday you wish.
Where can I dance?
Our weekly dance starts right after the last class ends, so you can get dancing right away. The Madonna Inn hosts our weekly swing dance night from 8-11pm, so please join us!
